Alluri Sitarama Raju
1897 – 1924
Leader of the Rampa Rebellion, who stood with the forest communities of the Eastern Ghats against colonial rule.
Alluri Sitarama Raju led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922–24 in the hill tracts of the Godavari and Visakhapatnam regions, mobilising Adivasi communities whose livelihoods were threatened by colonial forest laws. He was captured and killed by colonial forces in May 1924.
Early life and background
Born in 1897 in the coastal Andhra region, Sitarama Raju travelled widely as a young man and settled among the hill communities of the Eastern Ghats, where he became known for his asceticism and his concern for their welfare.
Historical context
Colonial forest laws, including the Madras Forest Act of 1882, restricted the traditional shifting cultivation (podu) and forest use of hill communities, and forced labour was common. These grievances underlay unrest in the Agency tracts.
Key achievements
In August 1922 Raju and his followers raided police stations at Chintapalli, Krishnadevipeta and Rajavommangi to obtain arms. Using the forests and hills, they carried on a guerrilla campaign against much larger colonial forces for nearly two years.
