Khudiram Bose was a young revolutionary from Bengal who, with Prafulla Chaki, attacked a carriage in Muzaffarpur in April 1908 believing it carried the magistrate Douglas Kingsford. The bomb killed two British women instead. He was arrested, tried and hanged on 11 August 1908.

Early life and background

Orphaned young, Khudiram was raised by his elder sister in Midnapore. As a schoolboy he became involved in the movement against the 1905 Partition of Bengal and joined revolutionary circles.

Historical context

The Partition of Bengal in 1905 provoked the Swadeshi movement and a wave of revolutionary activity. Douglas Kingsford, formerly Chief Presidency Magistrate of Calcutta, had become a target for revolutionaries because of harsh sentences given to young nationalists.

Key achievements

On 30 April 1908 Khudiram and Prafulla Chaki threw a bomb at a carriage in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, believing Kingsford to be inside. It was carrying Mrs Kennedy and her daughter, who were killed. Prafulla Chaki took his own life when cornered; Khudiram was arrested at Waini (now Khudiram Bose Pusa) railway station.
